Lake Hood Seaplane Base is really two lakes, Lake Hood and Lake Spenard which were joined in the 1940’s by two canals; a taxi lane and a lighted take off lane. The take off lane is the most southern lane and is aligned East-West.
The lake usually opens for water operations in the second week of May and closes in the third week of October. After freeze up, the state maintains three groomed runways on the lake for ski equipped planes.
